Earlier this week, the team at Hash Rush announce the alpha signup for their upcoming RTS blockchain game. There are a lot of exciting additions to the game, particularly a combat system as well as a functional marketplace, major graphical improvements, tweaks to the UI, new units, structures and a whole lot more.
The alpha launches July 31, and signup is now live at https://www.hashrush.com/
Can you tell me a bit of background about you and your team? What inspired you to get into blockchain / crypto games?
Hash Rush was created by Kris Vaivods and Nathan Ziedonis, two twenty-something Latvian gamers. Kris has also been involved in cryptocurrencies for a few years, primarily as a hobbyist miner as well as a masternode operator. Their combined passion for gaming plus interest in blockchain tech naturally led to the idea of combining gaming with mining, and Hash Rush was born. Given the resource management element of RTS games ties well with crypto mining management, plus the ability to tell stories through this genre, a real-time strategy title just made sense.
Tell me about how the vision for Hash Rush came about. What inspired you to make a game like this?
The idea came to the guys one evening. Instead of letting it fade from memory, they acted on it and got underway with an extensive fundraising campaign. Kris self-funded the early stages himself, getting initial concepts and artwork from a team largely assembled on Upwork. Their first employee, lead concept artist and illustrator Dendy Dhamier, is still with the company. Kris and Nathan prepared a whitepaper, as is par for the course when going the ICO route, and found some early investors thanks to a lot of interest from Japan. VZ Games has since grown to see over 20 staff working on the project.
What is the basic gameplay, story, and marketplace of Hash Rush? How does the game and marketplace work?
After a mysterious solar flare from a giant sun at the centre of the Hermeian sector, crystals throughout the galaxy were imbued with special energy, and became known as Crypto Crystals. They’re a source of great power, highly valued throughout the universe – but they’re also able to infect the planets they’re found on, sometimes mutating the flora and fauna. Crystals can be obtained not only from underground mines, but also from the spoils of victory when defeating the monsters that threaten your planet.
What are some of the barriers you see ahead for your project and Crypto Games in general?
Crypto still has a very high barrier to entry in terms of easy onramping of newcomers. The amount of new concepts one has to grasp coupled with unfriendly UIs and fears around security all make for a challenge we need to face and overcome when designing user journeys. That said, I do feel we’re very much in the dial-up age for crypto. Compare dialing in to a BBS from your command line or even setting up WinSock on Windows 3.11 to what we have today where your devices are just permanently connected at high speed. That day will come for crypto too, and VZ Games are excited to be along for the ride!
