ExoPlanets is a multi-layered space-themed crypto game. Players can buy ExoPlanets that have REAL names and data pulled directly from NASA’s database. To add more depth to the game, each ExoPlanet is also matched with a Crypto Currency. What this means is that your ExoPlanet is also affected by the volatility of the Crypto Currency that’s matched with it, adding an extra layer of strategy to your decisions.
The team behind the crypto game, ExoPlanets, launched a brand new website today! And to commemorate this historic moment, we’re going to publish our interview with them.
Can you tell me a bit of background about you and your team? What inspired you to get into blockchain / crypto games?
My name is Yaron, I am ExoPlanets Product Manager.
ExoPlanets is being developed by a new gaming studio called Sunrise Crypto Gaming. This is our first project, we’re about 11 people so far, and each and every one of us is very skilled in his field. Most of us have an extensive background and knowhow in the crypto industry. The main thing that brought us together is gaming. We’re all gamers from a very young age, from our developers to our designers and even the marketing guy 😀
We came up with a crypto gaming studio since we are so involved in the crypto industry that we wanted to start a project to help that industry grow and increase adoption rate. When we came to the conclusion that we’re all gamers and we can combine our passions – crypto and gaming together, nothing made more sense than harnessing our skills and knowledge to make awesome crypto games!
Tell me about how the vision for ExoPlanets came about. What inspired you to make a game like this?
After we realized that crypto games is the greatest idea ever, we researched the market and were amazed by the current status of the genre: silly little static jpgs that don’t do anything besides being cute or cool – and that is called a game. and it’s actually working and is very successful. In that moment we knew we had to bring the gaming into the crypto games genre. We decided we need a new kind of concept and angle for the crypto games genre, but we also wanted it to be more than a game. we wanted it to be an experience. And what better experience is there than a beautiful game that is based on something real so you can also learn new stuff from?
Space immediately came to mind in that meeting. But space was too generic and too sci-fi. We wanted something real, something scientific, and that’s when we came with the idea of ExoPlanets. ExoPlanets are real planets outside of our solar system that are confirmed to be planets by NASA and are documented in NASA’s database.
ExoPlanets were the ideal candidates to be represented by an ERC721 tokens since every one of them is unique and rare. There are currently only around 3700 confirmed ExoPlanets, which will make them a very rare asset in a crypto game! Combine that with a very cool and awesome graphical representation (that is not a freaking static jpg!) and you got yourself an amazing, scientifically accurate crypto game. But how do you make it fun? This is where we started talking about games we love and what we learned from them, and came up with a pretty exciting formula for ExoPlanets by mixing different concepts from games like No Man’s Sky, Spore, Age of Empires and Master of Orion, and came up with the most awesome gaming experience ExoPlanets can offer, since it will have it all; Evolution of life forms, technological advancement, space exploration and conquest.
What is the basic gameplay, story, and marketplace of ExoPlanets? How does the game and marketplace work?
We didn’t want to make the game too simple since a “collectibles” game sounds dull to us. We wanted it to be playable, and interacting 2 static images together with a minimal movement animation just won’t cut it for us. So here’s the gist of ExoPlanets: There will be a marketplace for buying and selling ExoPlanets with real names and info from NASA’s database. Each ExoPlanet will also have unique attributes and unseen before crypto related features like our innovative Crypto Matching™ mechanism that matches each ExoPlanet with one of the top 50 cryptocurrencies from CoinMarketCap, and that cryptocurrency will affect your ExoPlanet’s evolution rate and other variables forever. This means that when playing ExoPlanets, your game is also influenced by the real crypto market, so choosing and owning an ExoPlanet with your favorite cryptocurrency is both fun and strategic! You can read more about it on our Medium intro article. ExoPlanets will also have very awesome 3D graphics and environments for you to play in and view your ExoPlanet in space. The goal of the game is to evolve your ExoPlanet so that life will grow on it and eventually have civilization that is able to build spaceships for galaxy exploration and taking over smaller resource planets. Taking over resource planets will allow you to mine ExoTokens, which are ERC-20 tokens used throughout the game and its very strong ecosystem. Players who control the most resource planets in the galaxy will lead the galaxy board and will win a prize pool every month or so.
What are some of the barriers you see ahead for your project and Crypto Games in general?
Our biggest barrier at the moment is designing a very precise ecosystem that will allow the game to be playable, fun and profitable for a very long time while considering the best and worst case scenarios for all the game’s mechanisms like mining, limited tokens supply, limited ExoPlanets supply, players becoming too strong and so on.
If we look at the big picture of the Crypto Gaming industry, the barriers are very clear – developers aim for collectibles type of games instead of actual games. This genre will not pick up properly in the world unless actual real games are developed by combining blockchain technology for real ownership of assets and transparency of information between devs and players, AND server side implementation for actual beautiful and fun gameplay (that is – actually making the game playable in real time).
Tell me about your perspective on blockchain technology and games in general. Where is this all going? and why is it important to you?
Blockchain technology is becoming a big deal for a reason – people are sick and tired of corruption, individuals with too much power, and just being stuck in the rat race in general. Bitcoin was invented because people lost faith in the conventional banking system and the non-transparent economy, the ease in which the big wigs lose or throw away the little man’s money and get away with it. The way I, and all of us here at Sunrise Crypto Gaming see it, blockchain is the age of transparency and redistribution of power. Giving back the power and control to every person, so that no government or bank can suddenly take our money away or block our account. This is what the world needs, for every aspect of our lives.
This is the same in the gaming industry. In the golden age of gaming, you’d buy a game and you got everything in it. You had a disk of the game and you could do whatever you want with it. It was yours. But now, we’re at a point where game developers sell you half-assed unfinished games, charge you for content that should have been there to begin with, make more and more “pay to win” type of games, and force you to validate your ownership online while playing the game, otherwise the game won’t work.
Crypto games are going to change all of that. Yes, Blockchain technology is not yet ready for mass adoption due to scalability issues and bottlenecks, but we’re so close to solve all of these problems, and we better be ready for when that happens. one of the biggest advantages in crypto games is that every asset you buy in the game, is actually yours. It goes in your private wallet, no one can touch it and you can do whatever the hell you want with it. This is a major advantage blockchain technology has over standard games. I’d love to really own the in-game currency I have in WoW, and I’d love to really own my skins in League of Legends, but any day the developers can shut the servers down or take away assets that I have paid for with real money, or even ban me from the game, as if I didn’t own these assets in the first place, and all of them will be lost regardless of my ownership.
Another major advantage of crypto games assets is that I can buy and sell assets on neutral marketplaces that don’t belong to the game which created them in the first place! This is epic. Imagine selling your weapons from Counterstrike on a general gaming market, and then have a game like Diablo allowing the use of 3rd party assets in the game, so you can run around and shoot demons with an AK-47 from CounterStrike? Wouldn’t it be awesome if it worked like that? This is where the crypto games industry is heading – open sourced, decentralized assets. Some games have already implemented such things and are allowing interaction with major crypto games like CryptoZombies – the famous Solidity tutorial that teaches you how to write smart contracts games, in which you learn to build CryptoZombies, who will then eat cryptokitties to evolve! 😀
This is the beginning of the future, and we here at Sunrise Crypto Gaming are going to help it happen, and fast. Everything we do is made by gamers, for gamers, and in crypto.
What is your roadmap, and what plans do you have for the future for your team and your project?
Although we didn’t publish our roadmap yet, we’re going to launch a presale very very soon for our early followers and fans, to give them a chance of owning one of the first few ExoPlanets to be released. After the presale it will be another couple of months until we launch the main game including the evolution of the ExoPlanets, space exploration and conquest, mining, prize pool and more.
For the long run, we aim to make ExoPlanets the first crypto game that actually feels and looks like a game, with a very strong ecosystem, lot’s of strategy for the gameplay of the players, vibrant marketplace with very rare (real-life based) assets that are not made up from our imaginations to mass produce whenever we like, and real playable 3D environments for actual gaming sensation (including future mobile app and VR support!).
Our vision for the future is to be the first crypto gaming studio to create real live FPS or MOBA crypto games that will soon set a standard in the entire gaming industry.
