CryptoMonsters World is a game built on the Litecoin blockchain by a company based in Bulgaria. It’s always refreshing to see teams trying a unique path, and CryptoMonsters is definitely doing that by integrating with Litecoin. In CryptoMonsters, players can collect monsters, level them up, and then evolve them. Each monster has a unique genome and evolutionary level.
We had the honor of connecting with Mindstorm, the team behind CryptoMonsters, to learn more about their team, their creative project, and their vision for the future.
Can you tell me a bit of background about you and your team? What inspired you to get into blockchain / crypto games?
CryptoMonsters World is developed by Mindstorm, a company based in Bulgaria. We have been working on different projects during the years, but this is our first experiment with the blockchain technology. Actually we are a small team – this gives us the flexibility to test different ideas and to experiment with cutting-edge technologies like blockchain, machine learning and VR.
Personally I am interested in technology and development of new things. When the Bitcoin Blockchain appeared for the first time years ago, I was curious to learn how it works and also intrigued by the possibilities. So my interest is mostly in the technology itself and how it can be used. In this context I wouldn’t say that I was inspired by something to develop blockchain games in particular. I would say that I was inspired by the technology itself to explore some of its potential – in this case – in the form of a game.
Tell me about how the vision for Crypto Monsters came about. What inspired you to make a game like this?
Nowadays there are many decentralized applications based on the smart contracts technology, which run on the Ethereum blockchain. We wanted to explore new ways to use the Blockchain technology and as a result the CryptoMonsters World project was born. One of the unique characteristics of our project is that the outcome of the game depends on the progress of the Litecoin blockchain. All computations are performed on the CryptoMonsters World servers instead of on the blockchain, thus eliminating the fees, which would be otherwise required. The cryptomonsters and their evolutionary history are stored on the platform itself. The primary goal of the project is to be an entertaining game and to provide its users with a fun way to spend some of their time.
What is the basic gameplay, story, and marketplace of Crypto Monsters? How does the game and marketplace work?
The game represents a virtual world, inhabited by the cryptomonsters – they are fictional characters, which compete and interact with each other in order to evolve and grow big and strong.
The story tells that all monsters were created by CryptoGod – each of them has a unique genome and an evolutionary level. The higher the level is, the more evolved the cryptomonster is, and the better its chances to grow larger are.
The game is based on the continuous generation of unique blocks on the blockchain, using the Litecoin network as an improvised clock. At every “tick” of the clock the evolution takes another step forward. It is the process of constant change of the cryptomonsters and happens as a sequence of evolutionary rounds, each of them opposing a group of cryptomonsters. Depending on the progress of the Litecoin blockchain and on the levels of the participants, one of monsters wins and consumes a part of its opponents. As a result the monsters change and evolve – they either grow or they shrink, exchanging some of their characteristics in the process.
If a monster falls below a given level, it ascends to Heaven to meet its creator – CryptoGod.
The main idea is that the higher the monster’s level is, the better its chances to evolve are, but on the other hand even the smallest monster can win and grow up very fast. If you believe in fate, you may find some similarities between this imaginary world and the real life.
At the moment there are two different types of games. The Fair Game is designed for monsters with closer levels. However, if a monster is brave enough, it could always participate in a Crazy Game, where no level restrictions apply.
There are also magical potions, which can be used to improve a monster’s chances to evolve.
A cryptomonster can also be split in two smaller monsters, thus allowing them to play in different types of games. Another cool feature of the platform is the cryptomonster’s timeline – it shows its complete evolutionary history – from its birth to its ascension to the CryptoMonsters Heaven.
Although CryptoMonsters World is an experimental game designed for entertainment, we decided to make the cryptomonsters tradable on the platform – as an additional option intended to improve the user experience and to make the game more interesting and appealing.
What are some of the barriers you see ahead for your project and Crypto Games in general?
The biggest challenge, which all games in this area must overcome in order to succeed, is to find a way to maintain the interest of the audience and to be what they should be by definition – entertaining.
Tell me about your perspective on blockchain technology and games in general. Where is this all going? and why is it important to you?
The Blockchain is public, decentralized and immutable ledger of digital transactions. This technology is great for publicly storing data, validating statements and proving of ownership without a centralized authority. On the other hand, the smart contracts will enable the creation of more complicated decentralized applications, which will also run on the Blockchain. So, I think we are going to see some pretty exciting applications in the near future.
What is your roadmap, and what plans do you have for the future for your team and your project?
We are working on some new features like merging of monsters, new types of games, new magical potions. We have planned a release in the middle of November.
